Use the restore method that matches the change. For a custom image pasted in Finder, select the small icon in Get Info and choose Edit → Cut. For NyaIcon changes, use its restore controls: Remove Theme keeps individually applied icons; Restore All removes all tracked NyaIcon changes and pauses icon rules.
Updated October 12, 2026. NyaIcon instructions refer to its macOS Tahoe 26 workflow. Check the confirmation shown in your installed version before proceeding.
Restore an icon changed with Finder
- Select the file, folder, or editable app whose icon you changed.
- Choose File → Get Info.
- Click the small custom icon at the top of the information window.
- Choose Edit → Cut to remove that custom image.
This removes the custom icon; it does not delete the selected item. Apple documents these restore steps for files and folders in its Mac User Guide. If an icon manager made the change, use that manager’s restore action first, because its saved changes may extend beyond a Finder custom image.
Remove a NyaIcon theme and keep individual icons
Open the active theme and choose Remove Theme. Read and confirm the dialog. This restores the app icons changed by that theme while keeping icons you applied individually. It is useful when you want to try a different coordinated look without losing your separate choices.
A theme’s Use Theme action targets matching supported applications. Folder icons are applied separately. Removing the app theme should not be treated as a reset of every folder or individual customization.
Restore all NyaIcon icon changes
- Open NyaIcon and choose Restore All in the toolbar.
- Read the confirmation: this removes the active theme and individually applied icons, and pauses icon rules. Downloaded icons and favorites stay in the library.
- Confirm only when you want that full reset, and wait for the operation to finish.
- Read the result. If some icons still need attention, follow the recovery message and use Retry when available.
- Check the affected apps and folders in Finder and the Dock.
Restore All handles changes tracked by NyaIcon. It is not a general reset of your wallpaper, Dock layout, or customizations made by other software. If you plan to stop using NyaIcon, complete and verify the restore before removing the app.
When to choose Undo instead
If the latest change was a mistake and NyaIcon offers Undo, use it to reverse that recent action. Undo, Remove Theme, and Restore All have different scopes. Choose Remove Theme for the theme’s app changes; choose Restore All when you want to clear NyaIcon’s tracked icon changes as a whole.
Why protected Apple apps behave differently
macOS protects certain system files and preinstalled apps with System Integrity Protection. That means an ordinary Finder paste is not a universal method for built-in Apple applications. Apple explains the protected locations and restrictions in its System Integrity Protection overview.
NyaIcon’s macOS Tahoe 26 workflow uses an approved IconServices Helper to change displayed app icons, including supported protected apps, without disabling SIP or rewriting sealed system app bundles. macOS may require approval. Support depends on the app and operating system; a preview image is not a promise that every installed application or future macOS release is supported.
Keep SIP enabled. If NyaIcon reports that a change cannot be completed, use the recovery guidance or contact support with the exact version and error. Do not change system protections or delete system files to force an icon replacement.
If the original still does not appear
Check the restore result first. A partial failure needs attention even if some icons look correct. If the operation succeeded but only the Dock is stale, save your work and reopen the affected app. Check the Dock shortcut points to the intended installed copy. See Mac app icon refresh and update troubleshooting for the next steps.
After an app update, the vendor’s default artwork may itself have changed. Restoring the default is not the same as downgrading the app or recovering artwork from an older release.
For folder customization, read how to change folder colors and icons. If a restore still fails, send the exact message and app versions through Help & Support.
