How to Change Mac Folder Colors and Icons

Choose a folder color or custom image on Mac, restore the original, and coordinate folders with a NyaIcon theme.

For an ordinary folder, use Finder’s folder customization controls when available, or paste your own image onto its small icon in Get Info. Choose a theme in NyaIcon when you want folders and supported apps to share a visual style.

Choose a built-in folder color

If your macOS version offers Customize Folder, select an ordinary folder in Finder, open the Action menu, and choose Customize Folder. Select a color, symbol, or emoji. Availability depends on macOS and the selected folder; system folders do not offer the same customization options.

Use your own image as a folder icon

  1. Open your chosen image in Preview and copy the image.
  2. Select the destination folder in Finder and open File → Get Info.
  3. Select the small icon near the top of the information window.
  4. Paste the image. If Paste is unavailable, check that you selected the small icon rather than the large preview.

To remove that custom icon, select the small icon in Get Info and use Edit → Cut. These Finder steps are described in Apple’s folder customization guide.

Coordinate folders with your Dock

A single colored folder can make an active project easier to spot. A theme becomes useful when you want several visible folders and app icons to belong to the same visual family. NyaIcon supports macOS Tahoe 26 and lets you choose a theme or import an image or ICNS file. Select the folders you intend to customize, apply an icon, and check the result in Finder. Use Undo or Restore original when you want to reverse the change.

For a quiet desktop, try Cozy Pastel. For a warmer illustrated style, compare Capybara Solid. Use the previews to decide which shapes remain clear at your usual Finder icon size.

Choose a color system you will remember

Keep your system small: one color for active work, another for personal projects, and a neutral style for archived material. Give each folder a descriptive name. Color alone can be hard to distinguish on some screens and should not replace a readable label. Changing a folder’s appearance does not organize the files inside it.

When the result is hard to see

Check the folder in Finder’s icon view and try a larger icon size. If you see a generic image-file symbol, return to Preview and copy the image itself before pasting again. Test a folder you created and can edit before trying a protected location. For a complete desktop palette, see three aesthetic Mac setup ideas.
